What is manual therapy?

Manual therapy (or massage therapy) is a noninvasive, outpatient procedure that uses the hands and/or tools to manipulate your muscles and other soft tissues.

During treatment, your provider uses varying pressures, movements, and massage techniques to encourage blood flow, relieve tension, and promote relaxation.

Although many people associate massage with spas, the treatment is proven to help injured muscles heal faster and stronger.

Are there different types of manual therapy?

The Natural Health Sports Therapy team provides several types of manual therapy, including:

Sports massage

Sports massage emphasizes easing muscle and tendon tightness in athletes and other active people. It also addresses specific injuries, preventing them from getting worse and speeding up your body’s healing process.

Trigger point massage

The team recommends trigger point massage if you have muscle knots (trigger points).

During trigger point massage, your therapist applies direct pressure to your trigger points. This increases circulation to the area and helps the muscles relax. It also relieves pain and eases muscle tension.

Myofascial release

Myofascial release supports the fascia, a web of connective tissue beneath your skin.

During this manual therapy, your provider kneads and stretches your skin and muscles using their hands and varying pressure. This relieves tension and tightness and increases nutrient-rich blood flow to specific areas of your body.

Joint Mobilizations

Joint Mobilizations are used to improve the range of motion and function of joints by applying controlled, passive movements. They can help reduce pain, decrease stiffness, and enhance flexibility by targeting the joint capsule and surrounding tissues. These techniques are often used to address conditions like arthritis, joint dysfunction, or post-injury rehabilitation. Joint mobilizations also promote better joint lubrication, which can aid in tissue healing and improve overall joint health.
